Europa staircase 4000

The biggest exercise machine in the Alps! Located in the village of Partenen, the staircase has 3,609 steps.

The ultimate fitness kick

Originally installed as a supply line for the construction of the massive Silvretta hydro-electric dams, the Europa staircase has been reborn as the "world's biggest exercise machine"! With 3,609 steps (compare this with Ulm Minster's 768) it is the longest straight staircase in Europe. Boasting a height difference of 700m and a maximum gradient of 86%, the staircase presents a serious sporting challenge for professional and amateur athletes alike. In addition to the Austrian National Ladies' ski team, numerous marathon runners  and football teams use the Europa staircase 4000 as part of their training programme. A stop watch at the start and finish lines enables athletes to keep an ongoing record of their own personal best. And should the challenge prove just a little too daunting, bench seats situated alongside the staircase invite climbers to sit, relax and enjoy the wonderful panoramic views over Gaschurn and Partenen.
